Wilshire Grand: Reshaping LA's Skyline

As the iconic sail structure nears completion at the top of the Wilshire Grand tower, fabrication for the spire and beacon are currently underway at Valmont in Nebraska. The spire extends 172-feet above the top of the sail, bringing the overall height of the Wilshire Grand to 1,100-feet, making it the tallest structure west of Chicago. At the top of the spire sits a beacon that will be lit internally by an array of RGB LED lights; recently, the design team made a trip out to Ontario, California for a review of the beacon – an 18-foot tall structure of perforated stainless steel.

Located on the seventh floor opposite the pool deck is Attitude Health Club. It takes a new approach to the typical hotel fitness center by operating as a membership-based facility.  The gym offers Angelenos and hotel guests alike a private, upscale, and state-of-the art facility that also offers a full complement of classes and workout programs. Cross-pollination with hotel amenities like the pool, expansive deck area, and cabanas provides space to accommodate water exercise, outdoor yoga, and poolside massages during off hours.

Our design integrates elements of everyday fitness equipment and components into the interior architecture. Three colors of TRX fitness straps, brightly lit, are arranged into a series of grand ceiling sculptures, starting over the front desk and ending at the entry to the locker rooms. The series is visually connected via a 2D graphic painted on the raw concrete core wall. A two-way mirror at the entry provides a reflective surface for the group fitness area while allowing views to the inside by people in adjacent areas, creating a theatrical, high-energy entrance. Finishes and furnishings take their cue from high-performance fitness fabrics and sneaker materials.

The facility boasts over 1.7 million s.f. under one roof, including 30,000 s.f. of offices, and is over ½ mile in length with in excess of 270 truck dock positions. The site includes a nearly 1.5:1 ratio of trailer storage stalls to dock doors. Multiple ramps allow for flatbed trailer loading throughout. At the time of construction, the project was the largest single concrete tilt‐up distribution building in the world. In addition, tilt‐up panels at the high‐bay areas extended 75’ from top of footings to top of parapet, making them some of the tallest concrete panels in the world without intermediate floors. Crawler cranes were necessary to pick the panels.
