Located on the campus of the California Institute of Technology, this building was the first of a new campus master plan that incorporates open plazas, walkways, gardens, patios and arcades to complement the traditional architecture of the early campus.
Though this building recalls the language and forms of the past, its program is very much one of the future. As an advanced center for integrated research in the chemical and biological sciences, it has seven major resources centers involved in studies ranging from biomolecular design to laser spectroscopy.
Four levels of laboratory space, two of them below ground, form the two large blocks of the plan. The sub-basement level contains laboratories as well as archives and library spaces. Connecting these “laboratory blocks” are the “bridges” -- three smaller-scaled floors containing offices and conference rooms over the east- and west-facing arcades. Two auditoriums open directly onto the garden.
