Azusa Pacific University

Campus Master Plan

Azusa, California

AC Martin was commissioned to prepare a Master Plan that would enhance Azusa Pacific University’s  (APU) ability to secure necessary City entitlements for development of its 51-acre West Campus and provide a framework for the continued development of its 100-acre East Campus. The University’s ability to use the Master Plan as a communication tool was critical as the Master Plan segued into a Specific Plan and then a Specific Plan amendment as the University acquired additional properties.

AC Martin’s 3D master-plan model served a wide range of purposes:  to convey the university’s intent to the neighboring community and the City Council; to establish the campus build-out capacity that would define scenarios for future enrollment growth; and to define and illustrate the project for the environmental analysis.

APU’s two main campus properties are separated by one-half mile, and its West Campus will, at build-out, be as large as the original East Campus. The Master Plan used traffic analysis, campus shuttle route modifications, landscape planning, along with landscape, building and signage design guidelines to visually connect the two campuses and establish a strong sense of place. Sustainable landscape, stormwater management and energy analysis plans have enhanced APU’s environmental stewardship of its two campuses.
